Tips on How to Stay Positive

staying positive

This may be the millionth time that you’ve heard this, but life is so much better when you stay positive. It’s really true! If something unfavorable happens when you are already in a great mood, your mood does not sink as low as it would if you were expecting something bad to happen. This is a few tips I learned through my own experience of trying to stay positive on a daily basis. Not everyone’s tips that I have read worked for me, and my tips may not work for you, but you never know if you never try!

1. Smile! Smiling only uses 4 muscles in your face where as a scowl or frown takes many more. The more you force yourself to smile, the more your brain is tricked into thinking that you are happy and releases happy endorphins, which will make you naturally smile more! And get this- the more you naturally smile more, the more your “resting bitch face” doesn’t look so bitchy.

2. Laugh! And guess what? It’s easier to laugh if you’re already smiling! Every day, I look at websites such as BuzzFeed or YouTube just to have a laugh. Even if you aren’t laughing out loud, it still releases those happy endorphins if you enjoyed what you saw!

3. Look at the big picture. I know it’s hard. Most of the time when you look back at situations that you were not happy about, you laugh about them- even if it’s because it was so ridiculous. So what if you make a mistake? Imagine being older and looking back. You will most likely say “Could you believe I made such a silly mistake? I was such a noob!” In the moment, it could make you say “OMG I’m such a noob! ha!” So what if you trip? Imagine how it would look if you were not yourself in the situation? As long as no one is seriously hurt, I’d laugh! So why not laugh at yourself? Don’t take yourself so seriously.

4. Surround yourself with positive people. I live in LA…safe to say not a lot of people are positive. I mean how can you be if you’re constantly in traffic just to get to places?! There’s TONS of competition here. Even the media glorifies people who are constantly negative. If it’s impossible to surround yourself with positive people, try just telling your peers that you are trying to be positive and encourage them to try too. It will be a ridiculous conversation, but guess what? When I told my friends/family/bf that I’m trying to be more positive, inside jokes happen while you encounter situations. This also helps us laugh more! See how all of this overlaps?

5. Find the positive in every situation. So something shitty happens to you. You can’t wait to vent to someone. Take a second (maybe on your drive home before you see them or something) and think of one positive thing in the situation. Something gets cancelled- well now you have time to do something else that you need/want to! Someone hurts your feelings- well their life must be crappier than yours if they have to take things out on you! You get dumped- wow, wasn’t expecting that curve ball! (or maybe you were?)- now you can start fresh in life and find someone truly fit for you!  Get it? Even if it’s a reach, it’s still positive!

*If you look for more positive things, you’ll FIND more positive things!

6. Write it out. It’s almost creepy if you go through my notebook- every few pages alternate full of things that I am grateful for, and rant. If you’re feeling down on your luck or discouraged, get a pen and paper and just start writing. If you need to vent, do it, get it out of your system so that it doesn’t hang around! But maybe look for the positive in the end of it so that you end on a hopeful note. OR what I sometimes do is make a list of things coming up that I am looking forward to. When I feel like my life completely sucks, I make lists of things I am grateful for. Start with the easy stuff (family, friends, cat, etc.), and then thing about little things that help make your day better- Did you get stuck at that same stop light this morning? Did someone smile at you? Was your shower warm? Did you see something relatable on the internet today? etc.

7. Do things that make you happy. Listen to more music that you like, light candles if you enjoy them, wear your summer perfume if it is your favorite- even the little things count! Your quality of life will go up if you enjoy smaller moments throughout your day. When you do things, think “I’m doing this because it makes me happy” and guess what, you’ll get happier! The intent sets the outcome!

Being positive is important, there is joy pure joy even when you hurt. Your heavenly Father cares, trust Him, even when there is great pain. You will soon be smiling again.
